What do you see as the City’s role in preservation of historic
sites?
The City should role should be to set the expectation that site be
indentified and preserved for future generations whenever feasible.
Should the City be proactive or respond to community proposals?
The City should but I think it's unrealistic for the City or it's
employees to know everything about every historic site in Folsom. The
reality is we depend on experts like yourselves who have the passion
for Folsom's Heritage to identify issues and present proposals. As a
Historic District Commissioner I realized that it would be impossible
for me to know everything about Folsom's heritage ,but not impossible
to listen and learn from those who do know.
Should the City and/or Redevelopment Agency be a funding source?
It's a surprise to most citizens ,but candidates are not briefed on or
are given any detailed information about the budget. If saving
something historic requires funding then it should be evaluated on
it's merit and the City's ability to pay. Also, reoccurring
expenditures should be evaluated more strictly than one time
expenditures.
Given that Folsom’s history includes significant contributions and
specific sites relating to gold mining, ranching, Native American
culture and religion, Chinese settlement, the first railroad in the
West, the first power transmission in the world, and the first
cross-country automobile route, in your opinion, how significant is
the role of heritage/cultural tourism in the City’s economic future
and what will it take to capitalize on these historic resources?
We should not ignore any facet of tourism that can generate economic
prosperity. In order to capitalize on these resources , they must be
identified, they must be preserved , then we need to tell the story of
Folsom with them.
What is your vision for the City-owned historical/cultural
resources, specifically the Chinese Diggings,
This should be preserved if possible.
the Superintendent’s House on the railroad wye,
Although this was NOT presented to the Historic District ,but to
the City Council directly my understanding is that it will be
preserved on site during future redevelopment.
the Murer House,
I think a group like the HPL should take this over.
the Southern Pacific Depot, and the Interpretive Area?
These were incorporated into the Railroad Block and are a great asset
to teaching people about Folsom's history. I actually think the
Interpretive Area will see more visitors once the Railroad Block is
finished which will heighten more peoples awareness on Folsom's
history
What are your priority objectives relative to the Historic District
Revitalization project?
Safety is the first objective. Every time I look at a picture of the
Odd Fellows hall / Theater that was a Sutter and Scott I am reminded
of how much history we have lost due to fire. The City of Auburn lost
quite a few historical buildings just about 2 years ago. We can't let
that happen to our 600 block thru 900 blocks of Sutter St. The 2nd
objective would be to make is something we can all be proud of. So far
the conceptual design is just that. Lastly, the project needs to help
the businesses that are in the Historic District be economically
viable.
What is your vision for future use of the property located in the
Historic District which is currently occupied by the Corporation Yard?
Conceptually , this area should be compliment Sutter St and Railroad
block. Geographically its somewhat limited in the traffic volume that
can be supported so this should be taken into consideration as well.
When visitors and residents drive into the City from U.S. 50 onto
Folsom Boulevard, what impression of the City do you want them to
have?
That although Folsom has grown , a lot of care has been put into that
growth.
